As a seasoned gardener, curious hiker, or houseplant parent, making a quick and accurate plant identification gives you a deeper connection with nature. The LeafSnap app has been hailed as one of the best plant identification apps today, promising to enhance your experience in nature.

With a quick snap, it can recognize over 90% of all known plant and tree species on Earth.

But how good is it, really?

In this review, we break down its features, pros and cons, pricing, and overall performance to help you decide if it’s the right fit for your plant identification needs.

LeafSnap Plant App: How It Works

The LeafSnap app uses visual recognition software to instantly identify plants from photos of their leaves, flowers, fruits, or bark.

The steps are quite straightforward:

Launch the app on your phone and capture a clear photo of the plant.

The app analyzes the image and provides a list of possible matches, usually with the most likely identification at the top. You can view details such as its scientific name, care tips, habitat, and more.

LeafSnap also stores your scanned plants in a personal library, making it easy to revisit previous identifications.

What Other Standout Features Does the LeafSnap App Have?

The app may help you instantly identify your plants, but there are other features that can enhance your experience.

These features include:

1. Plant Care Tips

The app offers care instructions for many houseplants and garden plants. You can set up custom reminders to water prune, fertilize, or repot your plants.

2. Access to a Plant Library

LeafSnap saves all your identifications and also stores them in a personal library, making it easy to revisit previous identifications.

3. Plant Disease Diagnosis

The app allows you to organize all your identifications into a library and accurately diagnose plant diseases. Image: LeafSnap

Take a snap of your sick plant and the app can give you a quick, accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan.

Overall, its accuracy, rich database, and extra identification features make it a top contender among plant ID apps.

Plants come in all shapes and colors. Some are useful and harmless, while others are breathtaking and poisonous.

The key to accurately identifying what’s growing in your garden or the sidewalk of your city is relying on the best technology. This way, you can keep your desirable plants, little ones, and pets safe.

Plantnet is your top plant ID app, hands down.

Currently, the New York Times Wirecutter and CNN’s current top free pick, Plantnet has been hailed as one of the fastest and most accurate plant identifier apps available today.

Here’s How Plantnet Works

Plantnet can help you identify over 20,000 species of plants. Instagram/plantnet

Using your smartphone, tap on the app’s camera icon and take a photo of the plant. Plantnet will give you an accurate ID and brief details to help you better understand the plant.

The app also offers a link to a Wikipedia page and other users’ observations for information on its uses and whether they are harmful.

Sometimes, it takes one critical moment to get the correct information on Plantnet and save a life.

Take, for instance, this review from a Plantnet user.

Jessica Barret said,

“Our young son ate berries in the yard, and we were able to use this app to correctly identify that they were indeed poisonous. We rushed him to hospital, and he is doing fine. But it’s thanks to this app that we were able to make a fast decision.”

As a curious nature lover, you may have encountered a plant or animal you didn’t know and wondered if there was a way to instantly identify it.

Taking a picture of the species and trying to figure it out on Google (if you have network connectivity) may prove more confusing and frustrating.

If you don’t have a science background, it may be challenging to differentiate minor details that can give you an accurate identity.

However, one nature app has to come to the rescue.

With the iNaturalist app, you can now instantly identify plants and animals around you.

The app is a product of iNaturalist.org, an independent and non-profit organization that seeks to help people identify plants and animals while generating data for science and observation.

The app is free, and the best part is that it has both online and offline functionality!

How to Use the iNaturalist App

Take a picture or upload an image of a plant or animal on iNaturalist for an instant ID. Image: iNaturalist

The app offers an easy way to identify plants and animals. All you need to do is take a picture of the species or upload a photo already taken on the “Observe” icon. Thanks to their AI-powered identification feature, you can instantly and accurately identify the plant or animal.

You can also share your pictures with other users and scientists to get further verification for your observation. Apart from helping you with identification, the online community can help you learn interesting things about the plant or animal you’ve found.

Currently, the app can identify over 430,000 species of plants and animals, making it the leading source of biodiversity data for most species globally.

Other Benefits You Get on the iNaturalist App

Here are other benefits you can get from using the iNaturalist app:

You contribute to the biodiversity knowledge scientists can use to understand and preserve nature.

You can join smaller communities to learn more about local biodiversity and ongoing research and conservation projects.

You can discuss and help others identify plants and animals.

The app can help you control weeds by identifying native and invasive species.

The iNaturalist app is free to download from the Google Play Store and App Store.

The next time you need to identify a bird in your yard or a plant on your hiking trip, the iNaturalist app is all you need to make a quick and accurate ID.

As one user puts it, “Their photo identification is incredible, and the fact that others can verify your IDs is extra helpful, as well as being able to ID animals! Whether you’re looking to learn how to identify a few plants or restore a whole property. iNaturalist is the best!”

Many plant parents have depended on the Vera app for all aspects of plant care for several years. However, a few months into 2024, users were surprised to find an error message and denied access to the app.

To make it worse, users were disappointed to find that it’s no longer available on the AppStore!

Other users reported that the app just disappeared on their devices and when they tried to download it again, they couldn’t locate it on the AppStore.

So, What Happened to the Vera Plant Care App?

The Vera app was acquired by Bloomscape in 2020, and plant parents continued to enjoy timely plant care schedules without any issues.

However, based on several comments on Reddit, it seems that Bloomscape decided to withdraw the app without prior notice, leaving its users stranded.

Here’s what a few wrote:

One user said, “I just used it less than two weeks ago and logged new plants. Went back two days ago to look and it was gone.”

Bloomscape closed the app and has not provided information on when it will be back. Image: Instagram/Vera

Jilldxasd35 commented, “I asked them on Instagram, and they said they had to pause all of their work on the app and don’t know when it will return.”

Bloomscape may not divulge any more information about the app anytime soon, and as many users have pointed out, it’s best to find an alternative plant care app.

Alternative Plant Care Apps

We understand that you want the best care for your green friends and need a helping hand as soon as possible.

Here, we’ve listed the top two alternative plant care apps that you can consider to help you keep your plants healthy and thriving.

1. Planta

Some of us are plant lovers who adore our green friends, and some of us receive plant gifts and have no clue what to do next. Either way, the Planta app is here for us.

With over 7 million subscribers and caring for 32 million plants, the app is helping many people worldwide keep their plants alive and thriving.

That’s why it features in our ranking of the top 5 apps for plant care and diagnosis.

Emm, a Planta user, put it this way, “If you are a plant parent and need something to keep you organized, this is your app.”

The app offers three plant skill level options: beginner, moderate, and expert. With additional information like the plant’s location in your home or office and a picture of the plant, the app provides a personalized plant care plan for you.

The best part? It’s free!

Let’s look at what Planta can do for you.

Here’s How Planta Can Help You Take Care of Your Plants

The Planta app can help you in:

1. Identifying a Plant

If you have no idea which plant you have, you’ll probably do everything else wrong.

But not with Planta.

All you need to do is scan the plant, and it will instantly identify it down to a variation if required. That way, you can find out how best to take care of your plant, including where best to place it based on the light conditions in your rooms.

2. Keeping Up With Plant Care

Planta provides the information you need to care for your plants.

Taking into account your plant size, light, and soil type, the app offers smart reminders on when to water, mist, fertilize, wipe, re-pot, and snip your plants.

3. Diagnosis and Treatment of Sick Plants

If you’ve noticed brown spots on the leaves or some of your plants are wilting, Dr. Planta can help you find the cure.

With the right diagnosis and treatment plan, you can nurse your plants back to health.

4. Accurate Plant Care Advice

Planta provides the best and most accurate advice on keeping your plants at optimum health. You can find free tutorials and action tips on their Instagram and YouTube.

The app is available to download for free on Google Play Store. However, to access features like Dr. Planta, smart care reminders, and plant guides, you need to subscribe to Planta Premium for $7.99 — 1 month, $17.99 — 3 months, or $35.99 — per year.

So, is Planta Worth It?

Absolutely! Planta provides a hassle-free way to care for your plants. You don’t have to think about them or draw up watering and fertilizing schedules yourself.

One user on the Play Store said, “It’s the app I’ve been looking for to help me keep up with my 180 plants!”

Identifying plants is a fun and informative practice.

You may stumble upon a certain plant in the garden or wish to be a plant parent but don’t know anything about the plant you like.

Instead of searching the internet for the plant’s name by description, you can use plant identification apps that provide details about it with a single picture.

Not only do they provide the name of the plant, but they also give more details about it and professional care tips for home plants.

We previously covered apps that identify plants with the internet. But they are only useful if you have an internet connection.

Here are a few free offline plant identification apps for iOS and Android devices.

1. PlantNet

PlantNet

PlantNet offline is a plant identification app and website that helps you identify plants in different locations.

The app is powered by professional scientists worldwide who gather and analyze all the photos taken to provide identification and information.

The app helps you understand flora and fauna, such as flowering plants, cacti, vines, ferns, trees, and grass.

The app’s database has about 20,000 plant species, which is still helpful to beginners and plant lovers.

However, it’s important to note that the clearer the picture, the more accurate the information you’ll receive regarding the plant under observation.

How to use PlantNet

Take a photo of the plant using the camera icon on the app’s bottom navigation menu.

A page should pop up with information and features that help you identify plants, such as their family, genus name, common name, and extinction status.

Using visual recognition software, tap the small gallery icon next to the camera icon to identify plants from photographs.

Free and offline: It’s one of the few plant identification apps that work offline and doesn’t have ads.
Unique and user-friendly features: PlantNet is user-friendly for both adults and children. It also has many features identifying plants, flowers, and tree species within seconds. Furthermore, its enormous database has information on more than 20,000 types of flowering and non-flowering plants, trees, grass, ferns, conifers, cacti, and wild plants.
