How to Stop Grass and Weeds From Growing Under a Chain Link Fence

A chain link fence is a popular solution for property owners who want secure, transparent, and airy fencing around their property.

However, controlling unwanted grass and weeds under the fence can be a frustrating challenge. These areas are often difficult to reach with regular mowing equipment and can quickly become overgrown.

The grass and weeds are not only unsightly but can also cause potential damage to the fence structure.

If you’re struggling with pesky infestations under your fencing, worry no more. Here are some effective methods to prevent the grass and weeds from encroaching under your chain link fence.

Regular Trimming

Trimming is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep grass and weeds from growing under your fence. Using a string trimmer is more effective in helping you cut down vegetation close to the ground.

Regular trimming requires consistency but with good effort it will help maintain a neat boundary along your fence line.

However, in the long term, this may only prove effective if your neighbour keeps up with regular maintenance as well.

Edging

Installing metal, plastic, or stone edging along the fence line can create a physical barrier against encroaching grass and weeds. It is relatively easy to install and can also prove helpful in containing the additional protective layer of mulch.

Apply Mulch

Mulch is an easy and effective way to keep your fencing neat and functional. It blocks the sunlight from reaching the soil, preventing new weed growth.

After manually clearing existing weeds, dig a ditch about 4-5 inches deep, lay a landscape fabric, and finally a thick layer of organic mulch (2-3 inches) like wood chips or bark on top of it.

The landscape fabric acts as a physical barrier, preventing weed germination, while still allowing water and air to penetrate. A fabric and mulch combination offers a long-term control solution for grass and weed encroachment without the need for frequent maintenance.

Install a Mowing Strip

A mowing strip is a narrow strip of concrete or paving stones installed along the fence line. It prevents grass and weeds from growing directly under the fence and provides a stable surface for mowing and trimming equipment.

Plastic strips, for instance, come in round or square intersection shapes but you can also measure the posts and cut the strip intersections to size. Firmly place the entire strip along the fence, ensuring the area is well covered.

Apply Chemical Herbicides

Chemical herbicides can be an effective solution for more persistent grasses and weeds around the chain link fence. Apply selective herbicides like dithiopyr and prodiamine or non-selective herbicides like glyphosate or dicamba for the specific types of weeds on your landscape.

If you prefer more long-term protection, once the weeds are dead and removed, you can lay a landscape fabric or install a mowing strip.

When using herbicides, it is crucial to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid damaging your fence and harming children and pets.
