Why Homeowners Are Shifting to Soda Crystals for Weeds and Algae Elimination

Homeowners are always looking for the best tactics to eliminate weeds and the slippery algae around the house.

There is no shortage of organic and chemical methods for tackling weeds. However, one simple and inexpensive method homeowners have currently turned to is soda crystals.

Best known for cleaning outside spaces like patios and pavers, it turns out it can also effectively kill weeds and algae. You’ll have clean and weed-free outdoor spaces in one go!

How Soda Crystals Work

Soda crystals, (also known as soda ash, sodium carbonate, or washing soda), provide an organic and highly effective option for tackling weeds. The salt in the crystals dehydrates the plants, preventing growth, and eventually killing them.

Would you like to give it a try but are not sure how to go about it? You’ll find it easy to apply, plus, it won’t take much of your time.

Here’s how to apply soda crystals for weed control:

1. Clear and Wet the Area

Remove debris around the target area. Dampen the area using a hose or watering can to prevent the wind from displacing the crystals.

2. Shake to Break Down Big Crystals

Shaking the package helps to break down big lumps so that you can achieve an even application.

3.  Spread the Crystals

Spread a thin layer of the soda crystals across the target area and let them sit for 1-2 days. Note that the crystals can be toxic to animals, so you may want to keep your pets indoors.

4. Scrub and Rinse the Area

This might take some elbow grease, but it’s satisfying to see the carpets of algae or tiny weeds turn brown and easily come off. After the scrub, give the area a good final rinse to wash away any remaining crystals.

Don’t wait for weeds and algae to overtake your outdoor spaces. Try the gentle and inexpensive soda crystals to eliminate them for good.
